The Impressive Technologies in the Volvo EX90

The Volvo EX90 is an upcoming large electric SUV that will be the most technologically advanced Volvo vehicle ever made due to a number of new technologies, many of which are aimed at improving its safety for every occupant.

The LiDAR driver assistance system

The Volvo EX90 will be the first Volvo vehicle to make use of a LiDAR sensor in order to better be able to sense its surroundings. This technology is capable of detecting a wider range of obstacles than regular cameras and radars, day or night. The inclusion of a LiDAR is a step in the direction of fully autonomous vehicles since it expands the capabilities of the Pilot Assist driver assistance system. In addition, the EX90 includes a large number of other sensors, many of which monitor the driver in order to detect their level of attentiveness. If the system detects that the driver is getting drowsy or unresponsive, it will issue warnings that increase in assertiveness until the driver takes back control.

The interior radar sensor

The Volvo EX90 is the first vehicle to be equipped with an interior radar sensor that prevents inadvertently leaving someone or a pet inside a locked vehicle. This sensor is engineered to detect micro-movements such as the breathing of a sleeping baby. The sensor is triggered every time the vehicle is locked in order to make sure that no one is left inside or in the cargo compartment. If the radar detects a living being in the vehicle, the doors will remain unlocked and a message will be displayed on the center infotainment screen. In addition, the climate control system will remain active in order to prevent hypothermia or heatstroke, which is the leading cause of death for children left in vehicles in North America.

Bi-directional charging

The Volvo EX90 is the first Volvo electric vehicle to benefit from a bi-directional charging system. This technology makes it possible to use the energy stored in the vehicle’s battery for other uses than simply driving. For example, this means that the EX90 can be used to power a number of electrical appliances when out on the road, such as a cooktop or an air compressor to make life easier when camping in the wilderness. In addition, the bi-directional charging of the Volvo EX90 can be used to power an entire house during a power outage.
